The Pineal Gland
The potential of the pineal gland is only beginning to be realized by modern science. The pineal was the most recent endocrine gland discovered in the human brain.
Its location deep in the brain has led to many metaphysical theories attached to its function. Some believe the gland is dormant, but can be awakened to enable “telepathic” communication. Rene Descartes called the pineal gland the “seat of the soul.” It is also associated with the sixth chakra referred to by yogis as the Ajna, or third eye chakra.
The pineal is in the very center of the brain, and is shaped like a raisin-sized pine cone. It was long believed the gland was singular, but under a micron microscope two tiny hemispheres have been recently detected. Interestingly, the pineal gland is bio-luminescent as if lit by an internal light.
Although located deep in the brain, the pineal gland is sensitive to light, and has lens, cornea and retina like normal eyeballs. It releases a derivative of the “feel good” chemical serotonin called melatonin. This hormone modulates our wake and sleep patterns, and also adjusts our sex drive according to the seasons.
Two bio-mineralization forms are present in the gland: (1) So called “brain sand” — a polycrystalline complex a few millimeters long, and (2) tiny calcite micro-crystals about 20 μm long. The calcite micro-crystals bear a striking resemblance to the calcite crystals in the inner ear, which exhibit qualities of a piezoelectric electric field.
For centuries esoteric groups taught that the pineal gland connects us to higher frequencies and spiritual worlds much like a brain-based wireless transmitter/receiver. Science now tells us that the pineal gland crystals could truly allow an external electromagnetic field to directly impact the center of the brain. The piezoelectric property of the crystals may also allow them to interact with the electrical component of electromagnetic fields.
Historically many variations of this pine cone shaped gland have appeared across Europe and Egypt. It is found on the staff of the catholic Pope and the Egyptian god Osiris. The gland is known to Freemasons and is carved into medieval churches across Europe. It also appears on the back of the USA $1 dollar bill floating above an Egyptian pyramid. Isn’t it interesting how science sometimes catches up with ancient intuitive knowledge?
